Artsmark Silver Award for Chalford Hill School
We are delighted that we have achieved a silver Artsmark award from Arts Council England. This prestigious award was given in recognition of our school's exceptional commitment to creativity. We were praised especially for our links with local artists and organisations, our support for staff in arts training and for our emphasis on diversity and creative approaches throughout the curriculum. Congratulations!
Pirates of the Curry Bean
Our children in y5 and y6 put on an incredible show this week which was the talk of Chalford! Everyone involved pulled out all the stops to make this a vintage performance. Very well done to our y6 children, who stepped into their character’s shoes confidentially, and our y5 children, who sang beautifully and provided the rats and monkeys! We are so proud of the children who have worked so hard to make this a show to remember.

Hares' Viney Hill Residential
On the week of 23rd March 2026, Year 6 went on their amazing residential trip to Viney Hill outdoor adventure centre in the Forest of Dean. During the week we undertook a range of exciting outdoor activities including: rock climbing, raft building, indoor caving, crate stack, ‘all aboard’, ‘quick jump’ and many more. We stayed for three nights in rooms in the old house. The rooms were really comfortable and it was great to have a sleep-over with our mates – three times in a row (although we were all struggling with lack of sleep by Friday!)
The food was delicious (bacon sandwiches and syrup pancakes for breakfast!) and the instructors were all really fun.
Some of the activities really challenged us but we all proved to ourselves that we could overcome our fears – and that felt amazing. We were all pleased to see our parents again on Friday but it was an experience that we will never forget. Next year’s Year 6 will absolutely love it too!!

World Book Day
We had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day in school. We started the day with an assembly showcasing the amazing book lanterns and peg dolls the children have created at home. They then all enjoyed their 'Books at Breakfast'; listening to a story whilst eating a pastry with a glass of milk. Throughout the day, classes have been taking part in a special World Book Day Treasure Hunt, the aim of this being to reveal a secret message in order to win the class a book prize. The enthusiasm and joy we have seen is exactly what World Book Day is about.
Many thanks to all families for helping to make this such a success. Thanks also to the PTA for funding the breakfast goodies.

Bethlehem Bake-Off
Huge thanks to everyone involved in the ‘Nativity Bake-Off’. The children were incredible (especially considering it’s almost the end of a long term) and we are so proud of every one of them. Thank you to our wonderful staff who made this happen during a slightly more stressful term than normal (!) and to all the parents who helped with costumes and came to support their children.

Hares on Radio!
We're very excited that some of our Hares class will be featured on BBC Radio Gloucestershire’s Breakfast Show advent calendar on Friday 12th December.
The show is on between 6am and 10am, or on BBC Sounds if you miss it.
Squirrels' Tabletop Sale in aid of Shelter
Congratulations to our Year 2 Squirrels class, who have raised an impressive total of £112.40 for Shelter at their tabletop sale last week. We are all especially impressed by Mae, who came up with the idea of the sale herself. After meeting some homeless people, she was determined to find a way to help them. Her actions embody our school values, especially empowerment and respect.
Thanks too to the Y2 team for helping her to make the sale a reality, to the children and parents who helped out at the sale (despite the deluge of rain!), and those who came along in support.
Library Mural - Click to watch how Katherine created our new mural
Katherine, mum of Alice and Robin, has created a beautiful mural for our library. After creating a range of scenes she has incorporated our childrens' drawings of their favourite book characters, which has given the children a sense of empowerment through shaping their own learning environment. The mural marks the final stage of our transformative library renovations this year and we're delighted how it's turned out - creating an inspirational space imbued with the joy of reading.
You can find out more about Katherine's mural work on her website: https://www.katandowen.co.uk/

Chalford Hill Primary School celebrates 150th Anniversary
Staff and pupils, past and present, took a step back in time to mark 150 years of learning and community at Chalford Hill Primary School.
Passers-by in Chalford Hill on Friday 14th June, may have been surprised to see a Victorian headmaster, complete with bowler hat and frock coat, standing smartly outside the village primary school, welcoming children who were dressed from every era since the school first opened its doors in 1874.
The dressing up was all part of bringing the history of the school and its local community to life. Children were able to explore local artefacts, experience a Victorian-style classroom and hear what school life was like for their own teachers back in the 60s and 70s.
Staff and pupils were thrilled to welcome back more than 100 former pupils and staff for an Open Morning event, at which the school’s new mural depicting its rich history was formally unveiled. Former headteacher Jim Bocock presented each child with a book chronicling the school’s vital place in its community.
The life of the school is intertwined with our lives and the lives of those who have gone before us. From humble beginnings in 1874, with 100 children in one room, the school has grown into today’s version – 7 classes, almost 200 children, woods, lots of spaces to play in, and an outdoor classroom. We have everything we need to learn and to be happy.
On Wednesday 12th June, children moved around school in their house teams, working together to find out about the history of the school. Staff dressed up and taught the children about different periods of the school’s history, starting with how the school was formed, and finishing with life in school in the 70s and 80s!
On Friday, the school opened up its doors to former pupils and staff. School was inundated with visitors, all of whom were shown around by children. We have had numerous messages from visitors praising our tour guides and the welcome they received:
‘…it was the hidden curriculum of kindness, politeness and free thinking that impressed me.’
‘…the children we met were very polite and chatted in a friendly manner.’
