At Chalford Hill, our aim is to develop a curiosity for music, as well as an understanding and respect for the importance of all types of music and its role people’s lives. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community. We want children to be able to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences to involve themselves in music in a variety of different contexts.

We want our children to develop a love of music. This happens through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We use the Charanga Scheme of Work to support our teaching of music. Charanga provides a hands on and inclusive approach to music learning. Throughout the scheme, children are actively involved in using and developing their singing voices, using body percussion and actions, and learning to handle and play classroom instruments. They effectively create and express their own and others’ music. Through a range of whole class, group and individual activities, children have opportunities to explore sounds, listen actively, compose and perform. The music that children listen to and learn from is selected from a range of diverse genres and composers from around the world.
