Reading Rationale

Aims:

  • to inspire a love of reading;
  • to use reading as a tool to unlock knowledge and magic;
  • to provide children with the skills to read fluently.

At Chalford Hill, reading is an integral part of our curriculum and everyday life: the key that unlocks the world of learning.

We love to read; we love to be read to.

What we do:

High quality, diverse texts are used as a starting point for our English teaching throughout the school and are often linked to themes and topics.

At Chalford hill we read whenever – and wherever - we can! This takes many forms such as: 1:1 reading; modelling reading; whole class shared reading; whole class guided reading; group guided reading; opportunities to read aloud as well as the explicit teaching of comprehension skills.

Talking about books is an integral part of our learning across the curriculum and every classroom has its own books organised showing a range of genres to encourage children to read for pleasure.

Staff at Chalford Hill are readers who share and model a love of reading. Our re-developed library is a warm, inviting space filled with dreams, knowledge, imagination and adventure. Our English Team are constantly reviewing the range of books on offer to ensure a mix of up-to-date, diverse and classic stories and non-fiction books.

What you do:

Sharing books, stories, poems, comics – and even recipes – is a fantastic way to support your child’s reading journey as well as a wonderful way to spend ten minutes every day.

Regular reading is an essential skill to be maintained and cherished – whatever the age of the child. Children reading to adults, adults reading to children, children reading to children are all equally important.

Remember, there are also some great resources online to share with your children:
